U.S.-based Turner Broadcasting System Inc, a Time Warner company, has decided to shut its Hindi general entertainment channel ‘Imagine TV’ in India as poor ratings hampered any further investment in it. It had acquired this channel from NDTV for nearly USD 127 million in December 2009.
This channel really had low TRPs or not...is still a question to me. But certainly this channel had some very nice and sweet new shows like "Saware sabke sapne - Preeto", "Jamuna paar", "Gyaan guru" (My mom really liked this one). Some older ones like "Swayamvar", which brought a different reality show concept and the feel of prince and princess to the people involved, ""Jasuben Jayantilaal Joshi Ki joint Family" and "Kitani Mohobbat Hai" that I can recall. I will miss all these shows now. It doesn't feel good at all. It is like watching a suspense movie without climax.
I have never seen a channel shutting down like this. I mean, even though I knew Imagine TV shut down news, today I was searching from all the channels and asking my mom again and again - "Why isn't Preeto coming, has the timings for the show changed ?" Then I suddenly realised that the channel is shut and so are the shows on it. I am not a huge fan of "Preeto", but I get too inquisitive to know as to what will happen next. But, if I am so sad on this shut down news, I wonder how the fans must have reacted...
"Imagine TV has not performed and grown as per expectations. While some programmes delivered satisfactory ratings, overall the channel was unable to achieve the ratings consistency needed to sustain the business and support continued investment," Turner International Managing Director South Asia Siddharth Jain said in a statement.
Imagine was Turner’s second attempt in the highly competitive general entertainment (GEC) space in India after its GEC Real, a joint venture with Miditech, failed. Turner currently operates channels such as HBO, CNN, Cartoon Network, POGO, WB in India.
Probably, "business"...is what they thought of, when taking this decision. But, what about the lives of so many people that were dependent on this channel. Firstly, this news came as a shock to all the people who were happily shooting for the next episodes of their shows. Secondly, the viewers who were eagerly waiting for the shows the next day were very disappointed to see some old serials running again. The company should have given more buffer time and warning to both viewers and employees to handle it in a better way.
Well, it's true that Imagine TV shut down is not a good news, but with an optimistic view I see a better channel coming in place and doing justice to old half-told stories and its viewers.
